My daughter is a student in Plainedge and I was so inspired by you as an administrator - always Tweeting about the happenings in the district. You modeled the importance of connecting as a community. As a teacher myself, I echo your sentiment about how those in our lives influence who we are as educators. My daughter has Autism which can be equal parts amazing and challenging (depending on the minute!). When she was born, I started listing all the things I'd teach her, and while I have chipped away at that list, she has taught me more than I can ever hope to teach her. She has undoubtedly changed the way I see students and my approach to interacting with them. I teach high school students who seemingly have little in common with my 8 year old, but at their core, they're the same. They're people who learn in their own ways and who crave to be understood. I always say, "you cannot teach who you do not know." Similarly, the first standard in the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards is the same in every discipline: Know Your Students..and for good reason.

Thank you for continuing to inspire me as a parent and an as educator!Donna Caietnoreply@blogger.com
